Conditions That Qualify

What is a Dental Emergency?

There are some conditions that are obviously dental emergencies, such as oral injuries. Cracked, chipped, damaged, loose, or knocked-out teeth require immediate treatment, as do issues like serious cuts and lacerations to your child’s oral tissues.

But there are a lot of other conditions that qualify, too. A serious toothache could indicate an infected tooth, which is an emergency. A pulled-out filling, crown, or other piece of dental work is also an emergency. Even excessive gum bleeding could indicate gingivitis or gum disease, which counts as an emergency.

We highly encourage treating any condition that is causing your child serious oral pain or discomfort as an emergency. Come into our office to get a proper diagnosis and peace of mind.

Steps to Proactive Treatment

What to do with a Knocked-Out (avulsed) Tooth

You may think a knocked-out, or avulsed, baby tooth is not a big deal, but it is still important to come in for an exam to ensure that the underlying structures were not damaged. Dr. Choi will examine your child’s mouth and may take x-rays. Depending on how much longer it will take for your child’s adult teeth to come out, we may recommend placing a space maintainer to maintain the proper gap where your child’s missing tooth used to be.

However, an avulsed adult tooth is much more serious. You need to recover the tooth and put it back into your child’s tooth socket or into a container of cold milk to keep it moist. Then, you need to call us and come into our office within 1-2 hours. If you wait too long, we won’t be able to re-implant the tooth and save it, so time is of the essence. If your child needs emergency care, call San Marino Pediatric Dentistry for immediate treatment today.
